if there's one thing we've learned about
0:04
business in life is that people are the
0:06
X Factor they constantly surprise us
0:09
both in amazing ways and not so much
0:12
we're Ben Andia and welcome to n on this
0:15
business bites podcast this show is all
0:17
about real life things we all deal with
0:20
every day how they relate to business
0:23
and how to make some sense out of our
0:24
daily chaos welcome to the
0:28
show
0:30
[Music]
0:38
and welcome back to another episode of
0:39
non this business bites I'm Ben and this
0:41
is CA and we're gonna take this 15
0:45
minutes and we're gonna talk about
0:47
pitching yourself as a guest on a
0:50
podcast you know I've been podcasting
0:53
for 11 years now I've probably hosted
0:59
800 to a th000 shows I've probably been
1:02
on another five or 700 shows seea you've
1:07
probably been close to that number not
1:09
God knows who knows the numbers but
1:11
we've seen The Good the Bad and the Ugly
1:15
and I think we really need to talk about
1:18
this because it's little things that
1:22
make all the difference in the world so
1:25
seea let's no this okay okay oh oh I
1:29
know this is I I've been begging for
1:31
this topic because I've been posting a
1:32
lot about it fairly recently because I'm
1:34
tired I'm done I'm done as producers
1:38
okay we get it we more than anything get
1:42
it because we help our clients
1:45
understand promotion okay we understand
1:47
your plight peoples but here's what
1:50
kills me all right is people who pitch
1:53
themselves all day long can I get on
1:55
your podcast can I get on your podcast
1:56
oh looks like you have a great
1:58
podcast I don't know who you are and the
2:01
sadder part you don't know who I am and
2:03
you're pitching like a mofo and then
2:05
you're like I'm going to be the best
2:06
guest you've ever had and you're like
2:08
really what is it of value that you are
2:11
going to bring to the table because I
2:12
think let let's let's just call it
2:14
there's multiple levels here that I'm
2:16
going to go off on and I don't know if
2:18
I'm going to have enough for 15 minutes
2:19
for you guys but here's the
2:22
deal if you want to be a good guest then
2:25
be a considerate good guest you know
2:28
what number one thing if you want to be
2:29
a good guest it ain't about you okay oh
2:32
yeah you're the guest you're the
2:33
spotlight but it ain't about you or for
2:36
those that might want to be picking on
2:37
me it is not about you it isn't it isn't
2:42
about you how about that let me say one
2:43
more time we don't care about you
2:46
bragging on yourself if you want to be
2:48
on someone else's show the value you
2:51
bring is what do you bring to the host
2:55
to the audience that you're talking to
2:58
we don't care about your book we don't
3:01
care that you're the best speaker and
3:03
you know keynote speaker in the universe
3:06
we can see your bio two years we see in
3:09
your bio people we see it in your
3:12
pictures and
3:13
screenshot you know whatever
3:16
okay do the research I'm gonna R I'm
3:21
rant I'm you know what this is gonna be
3:22
the SE a rant for 15 minutes just
3:23
smileing on agree with me Ben seriously
3:25
you go girl I am like I I've had it I've
3:28
had it if you want to a good guest
3:30
that's going to be welcomed then do the
3:32
research listen for five minutes I'm not
3:34
even asking for the whole entire episode
3:37
listen for five minutes of the guest
3:39
that or of the show that you're trying
3:41
to pitch okay if you're an underwater
3:43
basket Weaver and you wrote an amazing
3:45
book on it and you could talk all day
3:47
and you did your own tedex on underwater
3:50
basket weaving do not pitch a cyber
3:52
security show what the hell are you
3:55
thinking what the hell do you think that
3:57
you can do or say that would make that
3:59
that show say
4:01
oh yeah cyber security and underwater
4:03
basket weaving there's such a natural
4:05
tie in okay that's it I'm done and I and
4:09
don't get me started
4:11
like come with a pitch oh no don't I
4:16
would love to talk to you but I was
4:18
listening to a couple of your
4:20
episodes your your show seems to be
4:23
about X I talk about this I'd love to
4:27
talk to you about why
4:30
and it says what do you think do you
4:33
have 10 minutes to
4:35
discuss that way I sit there and say
4:37
okay this person has invested some time
4:40
to listen to one or two of my episodes
4:42
or at least glance at the show notes
4:46
yeah understand that my audience is
4:50
cyber Security
4:51
Experts that this is what the show talks
4:54
about all day long I realize that I have
4:57
something that cyber security experts
4:59
would like to listen to and could add
5:02
some value to their lives here is what I
5:05
think you know or I listen to this
5:08
episode you had so and so talk about
5:10
this you know what I actually disagree
5:13
with that person and this is why and I'd
5:15
like to talk to you and bring the other
5:16
Viewpoint to the show that would be
5:19
interesting that would be interesting
5:22
but the thing is is everybody sit there
5:24
and say the show is about me no it's as
5:27
as CA said if not about you it's about
5:31
how you add value to our
5:34
audience you know my attitude as a host
5:36
is I'm a conduit my job is to be able to
5:40
sit there and say this is my audience
5:42
these are the people that listen to me
5:44
each and every week these are the people
5:47
that see value in what I
5:49
do I'm the gatekeeper I'm only letting
5:52
somebody on my show that's going to
5:55
speak to these people and add value to
5:57
their lives MH if you don't do that I
6:01
don't care how cute you are I don't care
6:04
how smart you are I don't care how big
6:06
an audience you have I don't care you
6:09
know how important you think you are I
6:13
don't want you on my
6:16
show because if you can't add value to
6:19
my
6:21
audience in a way that enables them to
6:24
go ha that was great I want to tune in
6:27
again next week to see who benera is
6:29
gonna get on their show next
6:31
week then I don't want to do that the
6:34
other thing that you need to do is come
6:39
prepared come prepared actually actually
6:42
be prepared don't do me a favor don't
6:46
ever send me a say here's the here's the
6:48
six questions I want you to ask me
6:50
because guess the first thing I'm gonna
6:51
do is burn the burn the sheet second of
6:54
all I'm going to I'm going to deschedule
6:56
our our our our our our uh our are
6:59
interviewed it's the first thing I'm
7:01
going to do second of all I says no I'm
7:04
never going to send you the questions
7:06
I'm going to ask
7:08
you it's a
7:10
conversation if you can't have a
7:13
conversation and talk intelligently and
7:16
extrapolate and break go through a
7:18
series of points on your own without
7:21
prompting without sounding like a
7:23
machine without sounding like everything
7:25
is pre-rehearsed I don't want you on my
7:28
show oh look okay look I'm gonna I'm
7:31
going to say something that is going to
7:32
be counter to what we just said I agree
7:34
100% I'm going to try
7:38
to get other perspective to the mix
7:41
sure there are some
7:45
individuals who maybe have higher
7:48
anxiety levels than others where they're
7:50
like look I I I actually have like a
7:53
clinical like need for structure and all
7:56
that and I'm okay with that I think it's
7:59
I think if you are of that personality
8:02
type it does not mean that it somehow
8:04
cancels you to be a future guest on on
8:07
people's podcasts and live streams and
8:09
all that stuff okay but the truth of the
8:12
matter is is the best content the best
8:16
conversations the most relatable
8:18
listenable entertaining whatever you
8:21
want to call it is a more spontaneous
8:22
conversations so for those that do have
8:25
higher tendency of anxiety um you know
8:29
that get uncomfortable if you're just
8:31
more inclined to be more introverted
8:33
look I get it I feel you the way to get
8:36
about around that and it sucks is um
8:41
practice okay but hey before you do
8:44
before you go any further let's also say
8:47
that the it's also the host's
8:50
responsibility yes to make the go make
8:52
the guest feel comfortable and enable
8:54
the guest to shine your number one rule
8:58
as a host is to enable your your guest
9:00
to shine and enable them to tell their
9:03
story in a way that's going to benefit
9:04
your audience
9:06
therefore every single host should have
9:09
a 15minute meeting with with the
9:11
potential guest before a to sit there
9:13
and say is there something we should
9:15
talk about what are the things we should
9:17
talk about are you a natural fit for my
9:20
show are you not a natural fit for my
9:22
show and if you are these are the things
9:25
that this how about we structure the
9:27
conversation so we're going to cover
9:28
these these type of things them okay
9:31
that works for you topics and themes yes
9:33
topics and themes I'm not going to give
9:34
you the questions but I'll give you the
9:36
topics and themes I also book an hour of
9:39
appointment and spend the first 10
9:41
minutes with the guest before we hit
9:44
record and remember that before you hit
9:47
record making sure the guest is
9:49
comfortable making sure that they know
9:52
how to present themselves in front of
9:54
the video making sure that their sound
9:55
is okay making sure their lighting is
9:57
okay making sure there isn't something
9:58
dist distracting in the background as a
10:01
hosts we are also responsible to make
10:05
sure that our guest is in the best light
10:09
possible and actually presents
10:10
themselves the best way that they can so
10:13
it's not just I'm not just ragging on
10:16
guests I mean there there's lots of bad
10:18
things I see from guests but I also see
10:20
bad hosts that all of a sudden you you
10:22
you jump on a call and they've already
10:24
hit the record button before you even
10:26
walk on board and you didn't even know
10:27
they had started recording
10:29
yeah no no yeah no let's keep this to
10:31
the guest because I we can definitely
10:33
wax po how to be a bad host but no 100%
10:37
it's a two-way street but but let let us
10:40
not mistake it okay if you're pitching
10:42
yourself to be a guest because you do
10:43
have an agenda we get it okay come with
10:47
something an interesting story about you
10:50
that makes you human and anything and
10:52
when we say storytelling it is important
10:55
okay so tell a story about yourself
10:56
that's going to trigger an emotion as to
10:58
why I can relate to you okay so one of
11:00
my personal favorite stories is um why I
11:03
never walk Barefoot it's not because I'm
11:05
Asian okay granted as an Asian we don't
11:07
we are told not to walk Barefoot because
11:08
you don't want to bring your dirty feet
11:09
into the house and all that good stuff
11:11
but the truth of the matter is is as a
11:13
child I ignore my mom ran outside
11:15
barefoot thinking oh I'm free like the
11:17
bird and I'm running up and down trying
11:19
to catch up with my sisters and then
11:21
Clump
11:23
cracks I stepped on a snail and it oozed
11:26
in between my toes Okay so
11:29
I don't know if I could describe it even
11:31
more I can if you would like me to
11:32
describe it more for you but let me tell
11:35
you something lesson learned there's a
11:37
reason why people tell you to do things
11:39
right but now you're going remember seea
11:40
had a snail crushman Tweeter toes okay
11:42
great but okay going back to that guess
11:46
those types of things are going to
11:48
endear you to the host so they're
11:50
relaxed as well so if I may say this
11:53
I've seen guests of some of my clients
11:55
you know a lot of my clients sometimes
11:57
they're firsttime host posts right this
12:00
is their first jump in and they're like
12:02
you
12:03
know they don't know what they don't
12:05
know but they want to do good job for
12:07
you but they're going to be nervous I
12:09
have seen some very arrogant guests and
12:12
and and it hurts me and saddens me to
12:13
say it there is a misconception that
12:16
when you start a a show right of some
12:19
sort whether it's live stream podcast
12:21
pre-record whatever you want to call it
12:22
audio room whatever that you need to get
12:24
the biggest stars first everyone wants
12:26
to try to get Joe Rogan first or
12:27
something right let's get Howard Stern
12:28
on you know as a guest let me get Oprah
12:31
okay look peoples try to think a little
12:33
bit it doesn't have to be a beag that
12:35
could be your beag as you grow and
12:37
develop but you don't need it from the
12:39
jump because why would you do that to
12:40
yourself and to your guest if you're not
12:42
prepared don't get a quote you know big
12:44
time because some of them may not have
12:47
the patience or the grace to give you as
12:49
you're developing your skills so as a
12:51
guest if you are quote the opras of your
12:54
industry of underwater basket weaving
12:57
right give Grace to your guests if
12:59
you're going to be pitching and you're
13:00
pitch slapping don't be surprised if
13:02
you're on guests that are like fumbling
13:04
through things I've seen some guests
13:06
that just have this look of like I don't
13:09
want to be here and me as a producer on
13:11
the back and I'm watching the behavior
13:13
like the body language and everything uh
13:15
there are times Ben I've wanted to stop
13:18
the
13:18
interview to be like we're done this is
13:22
not going the right direction but of
13:23
course I don't want to be the one to
13:25
make that decision but ooo there are
13:28
days where I'm just like stop looking at
13:30
your damn phone and stop texting people
13:32
oh my God if you're going to be a guest
13:34
can you please be present that's right
13:37
be there for your host I I don't I don't
13:40
know oh my God there's but here's here's
13:43
one more thing that you said about Pitch
13:45
slapping how many guests have you had on
13:48
your show it says and you can buy my
13:51
book on Amazon for:13:54
is and you can find me at
13:58
through the entire interview so every 30
14:02
to 75 seconds whenever they can you know
14:05
pitch their product or pitch their
14:07
service through the interview they're
14:09
doing that you know my attitude is
14:12
somebody has been gracious enough to
14:14
have you on their
14:15
show they will give you 30 seconds to a
14:19
minute at the end of the show to to you
14:22
know to say Hey listen is there
14:23
something you'd like to tell my audience
14:24
is there some a giveaway is there a
14:27
website where people can find you you
14:30
will get that process and guess what
14:31
it's going to be in the show notes as
14:33
well if you're sitting there and
14:35
pitching yourself in your services
14:37
through the inter whole interview nobody
14:40
wants to listen to it and people are
14:42
just going to turn it
14:44
off I I get it I get it you think you're
14:47
the most fascinating underwater basket
14:49
Weaver in the world people the problem
14:51
is is there's always another underwater
14:53
basket Weaver okay that's going to be
14:56
just as good but if they're more
14:57
entertaining they're more giving oh wait
15:00
and there's one other area that we
15:01
didn't really talk
15:03
about is uh be engaging like how many
15:07
times have we seen it where like you
15:08
want to be a guest and then you treat it
15:10
like a Q&A and it's like holy shyers if
15:14
I had a Q&A is not conversation people I
15:18
I don't know if people understand this I
15:19
I don't know how to declare it more and
15:21
I and I've coached a lot of people on
15:24
this watch each other listen to each
15:28
other
15:29
listen like laugh with each other ask
15:32
each other if you're a guest I think
15:34
it's 100% fair for you to ask question
15:36
back do you think so
15:39
absolutely I mean
15:41
it's yes so you yeah okay anyway I think
15:45
I think we're gonna have to have a part
15:46
two to this one I think we're definitely
15:48
gonna have a part two listen everybody
15:50
in the show notes we're going to get
15:51
going but put down your biggest pet
15:55
peeve when you're listening to a podcast
15:59
put your biggest pet pet peeve of a of a
16:01
podcast guest I would love to listen to
16:04
those in the show
16:05
notes I mean oh I mean yeah woo okay
16:08
look peoples the other thing too that
16:10
really irks me is I don't even want to
16:12
talk about the hardware piece maybe
16:14
that's a different conversation right
16:15
that's a completely different
16:16
conversation we'll make it into a
16:18
different episode but this one like
16:20
another thing about being a good guest
16:22
is to be curious of the host yes it's
16:26
not it's not like like do a little
16:29
research on the host themselves go on
16:31
LinkedIn or just go to any of their
16:32
YouTube channels and you can see that
16:34
like oh c is definitly allergic to cats
16:36
let's have some fun with that like you
16:37
know what I mean like tie something back
16:39
to you you and your store and your value
16:41
out of underwater basket weaving and it
16:43
could be yeah there was a story of a cat
16:45
that just went in there and just like
16:47
ripped up all the pieces and parts of
16:49
the you know basket weaving wood product
16:53
what is it wood is it Rattan what is it
16:56
I have no
16:57
idea there was a you you'll find out
16:59
later no no no there was a gal that
17:02
actually did a water weaving basket
17:05
thingy in college it was part of her
17:07
like art thing anyway um yeah no yeah
17:10
sorry you got me distracted and
17:14
I'm oh one more one more and then we
17:17
gotta let him go one more peoples if you
17:20
ask to be on someone's show you better
17:23
be cross-promoting I am so tired of
17:25
people saying let me get on your show
17:27
let me get on your show me get and then
17:28
create the thing for them and they don't
17:30
promotee it they don't like and by the
17:31
way I'm guilty of it okay I'm guilty now
17:33
that being said I don't ask to be guests
17:35
anymore but but just even if you can't
17:39
do it immediately to promote the show
17:41
like if it's a live stream obviously you
17:43
want to promote so you get you know
17:44
people watching it live but if you get
