if there's one thing we've learned about

0:10

business in life is that people are the

0:12

X Factor they constantly surprise us

0:15

both in amazing ways and not so much

0:18

we're Ben Andia and welcome to n on this

0:21

business bites podcast this show is all

0:23

about real life things we all deal with

0:26

every day how they relate to business

0:29

and how to make some sense out of our

0:30

daily chaos welcome to the

0:34

[Music]

0:42

show and welcome back to another episode

0:45

of non business bites I'm Ben this is CA

0:49

and here's a question for you what are

0:52

the goals you're aspiring for you know

0:55

we all sit there and say I would love to

0:58

have a million dollars

1:00

I would love to have a Ferrari I want to

1:03

have the house with the pool and the 2.5

1:06

kids and all of those wonderful things

1:10

that's nice how are you going to get

1:13

there we aspire to all these marvelous

1:16

wonderful things but guess what unless

1:21

we have an actual way to get from where

1:24

we are to where do we want to be those

1:28

are dreams those not goals

1:32

dreams and we need to sit there and say

1:35

all right in 5 years in 10 years I want

1:39

to be

1:41

here the greatest story I ever heard

1:44

actually was from Jim Carrey Jim krey

1:47

wrote himself a check yeah for $10

1:53

million and put it in his

1:55

wallet and I think it was and you

1:58

somebody's going to have to fact check

1:59

me on this

2:00

but when he finally got paid for Dumb

2:02

and Dumber he was able to cash that

2:05

check yeah and he actually said there

2:07

and he put it on a wall somewhere and it

2:10

was being able to visualize sit there

2:12

going I've got a plan I'm not just doing

2:14

this I've got a plan I'm going to do

2:16

this I'm G to do this I'm going to do

2:18

this I'm going to build my craft I'm

2:20

going to build my relationship I'm going

2:21

to build the trust I'm going to build

2:23

you know my

2:25

reputation so at one point in time I'm

2:28

going to actually be worth $10

2:31

million you know for an actual movie

2:34

he's actually been paid a lot more than

2:36

that in the time since but we need to

2:39

sit there and say okay not only do I

2:41

have a dream not only do I aspire to do

2:44

something but I've got a goal and a plan

2:47

to get

2:49

there and I want to talk about that CA

2:51

so SAA let's nod this man we have

2:55

aspirations for everything in life man

2:57

when I was a kid uh Mary L Retton was a

2:59

thing boy done da to myself but uh Mary

3:02

L Ron I mean she won the you know

3:04

gymnastics:

3:06

LA I believe and um I wanted to be a

3:09

gymnast and so then I I started doing

3:12

gymnastics and I aspired and I was all

3:15

about it except for the fact that I

3:16

realized it's a fracking lot of work Ben

3:20

it's a lot of work to as to Aspire for

3:23

something it is so much discipline you

3:25

just made me drool thinking about how

3:27

much work it requires and like that oh

3:29

my God energy it takes but you're right

3:32

I mean yeah there's a lot of planning

3:33

that needs to come into place there's a

3:35

lot of self um evaluation that has to

3:38

come into play to Aspire to those types

3:40

of levels um I think it's interesting

3:44

that for Jim Carrey let's use him him as

3:47

an example to me I would almost say like

3:51

maybe maybe that tells me about my

3:52

conservative more conservative thoughts

3:53

on things which is I'm a big fan for my

3:56

brain of yes you you need that one big

3:59

Grand Rio like that $10 million check

4:02

but I'm that be that beehag that big

4:04

hairy audacious goal yes the beehag but

4:07

I'm also a big fan of a little bit

4:10

aspire to little things as well because

4:12

if I don't get to my be hag oh I'm so

4:16

I've never heard that term before

4:18

beag you're a be are you a beag do you

4:21

have a beag I have be I do I have a beag

4:23

everyone in the comments everyone in the

4:25

comments do you have a be are you a

4:26

beehag wait no don't say that no do you

4:28

have a beehag are you a beehad you have

4:30

a beehag yes well well unless of course

4:33

you know your goal is to anyway okay

4:35

anyway so I was GNA say get married or

4:37

whatever but obviously I don't believe

4:38

in that but anyway uh but I do believe

4:42

yes having that big beug is great but

4:45

you have to also appreciate that that

4:48

aspiration is going to be a product of

4:51

all these little ones little successes

4:53

little things that you can put your and

4:54

tip your hat to to say you know what I

4:56

am chipping away I'm GNA get that beag

5:00

beag or not to be hag that is the

5:02

question man I'm going to title that now

5:04

question but you're but you're

5:05

absolutely right I mean there are steps

5:06

along the way I have clients that sit

5:08

there go I want to be a half million

5:10

dollar company they're they're a $20

5:11

million company today and I want to be a

5:13

half million dollar company I said fine

5:16

we're going to build you five different

5:17

brands along the way you're going to be

5:20

a $20 million brand then we're going to

5:22

make you a $50 million brand then we're

5:24

gonna make you a$1 hundred million doll

5:25

brand then we're going to make you a

5:26

quarter billion dollar brand and then

5:28

we'll make you a half billion dollar

5:30

brand you know you don't get there

5:33

overnight you most cars don't go from

5:35

one to a thousand you know there is

5:38

steps along the way that you have to

5:40

take you have to sit there and say Hey

5:42

listen I was able to do this I was able

5:44

to build the processes the process the

5:47

the people the processes and the

5:49

procedures in order to get me from A to

5:52

B great I got there okay now what's next

5:55

okay we got there okay now what's next

5:58

you know we don't go from zero to 100 in

6:02

one step we have to have those small

6:04

goals along the way not only to prove to

6:07

ourselves that we can do it but to prove

6:09

to others and also to have those points

6:12

of Celebration yeah because those points

6:15

of Celebration along the way give us the

6:18

impetus to strive just a little bit

6:20

further the next time you know you just

6:23

reminded me of something um in my

6:25

corporate life my boyfriend and I were

6:26

extraordinarily focused on um living

6:29

within our means and our be our beag was

6:32

just pay off the house we wanted to be

6:34

completely debt-free we wanted an

6:36

existence where we were we're pretty

6:39

basic people in general except for the

6:40

fact I really love food but outside of

6:43

that um we're pretty pretty mellow

6:46

people in general and once we achieved

6:50

it I just realized you just made me

6:52

think my beag wasn't as bagy as I

6:55

thought it was and now is that not a

6:57

sobering thing um because once we

7:00

achieved it we're like okay now we're

7:01

debt-free like What do we do with

7:04

ourselves and I'm not going to lie to

7:05

you maybe the question is also once you

7:08

do hit your beag how do you overcome it

7:10

because I think there's a mourning

7:12

process that has to go through because I

7:14

went through a bit of a like a I don't

7:15

want to say depression but I was like

7:17

lost like I didn't I didn't know what

7:20

else with my beag would be so um you're

7:23

reminding me of maybe I didn't beag

7:26

enough but and

7:28

sometimes paying off your house is not a

7:30

small feat people so you

7:34

know I don't know man like y have you

7:37

have you hit a be it's creating it's

7:39

creating goals that scare you it's

7:41

creating a goal that scares you I mean I

7:43

remember getting into the house I

7:45

remember when we bought this house and

7:47

we bought this house 22 years ago

7:50

walking around the house all night long

7:54

going how am I ever going to pay this

7:56

off how am I ever going to be able to

7:59

afford this mortgage on a monthly basis

8:01

how am I ever going to do it and we did

8:03

you know

8:05

within what was it some like 15 or 17

8:08

years we had paid off the house that's

8:11

awesome hey hey and what it enabled us

8:13

to do was to sit there and say okay now

8:16

that we've done

8:17

this what's next and we and and it's

8:20

reaching for that next set of goals and

8:22

there's nothing wrong with reaching that

8:25

goal and sitting there going that was

8:27

cool we deserve we deserve a holiday we

8:31

deserve a party we deserve whatever to

8:34

be able to celebrate Hey listen we did

8:36

it we achieved what we were trying to

8:38

achieve Okay now what's next yeah and

8:42

nothing wrong with you know what there's

8:44

some goals you may never reach there's

8:46

some goals that are so high out there

8:49

that if you reach for the stars and you

8:51

only touch the moon that's not so

8:54

bad that's not so bad at all but when we

8:58

have those stretch goals those things

8:59

that you sit there going don't know how

9:01

I'm going to get there but let's figure

9:03

let's figure it out what are the things

9:05

I need to do who are the people I need

9:07

to align myself with what are the things

9:09

I need to learn along the way what are

9:12

the minor steps that I need to do along

9:14

that way in order to get there in order

9:16

to build the skills to be able to do

9:18

what I want to

9:19

do that's a big deal like when I wrote

9:22

my first

9:23

book okay you wrote a chapter a day I

9:28

wrote a chapter a day that's impressive

9:30

the chapter turned into three chapters

9:32

chapter turned into five chapters and I

9:35

got to a point where I just I got on a

9:36

roll yeah and I ended up writing an

9:39

entire book in less than 45 days yeah

9:41

that's insane that's awesome which was

9:43

just nuts it was just it was absolutely

9:46

nuts but you get to a point where all of

9:49

a sudden you've

9:51

learned little hacks along the way or

9:53

little ideas along the way that enable

9:56

you to accelerate your goal and push you

9:58

towards your past of of success a lot

10:00

faster but we don't do that unless we

10:03

take that first step and there's and

10:06

that taking that first step is

10:08

terrifying it is but I don't know just

10:11

do it people I don't know you know

10:14

because we've done it that's why I'm

10:15

kind of like I don't know just do it I I

10:17

I don't see any downside of taking that

10:19

step and I we run into so many people on

10:22

LinkedIn who have like self-doubt and I

10:25

can't and it's so funny you see these

10:27

accomplished executives who if you just

10:30

were to judge them based on their titles

10:32

and their resume on LinkedIn you would

10:34

think they had it all together then you

10:35

have a private conversation with them

10:37

and the truth bombs come out and you're

10:39

just like oh truth nuggets don't want to

10:40

use a B- word uh truth nuggets come out

10:43

and it's like wow like how did you

10:45

function in this level of success you

10:48

know that's theoretical you know success

10:50

that everyone views and you still are a

10:52

bit of a you know what show you know and

10:54

it's

10:55

crazy because of fear and it's it's in

10:58

your head it's all in your head peeps

10:59

all in her head but it's all about

11:01

adapting resilience and

11:03

creativity we're going to throw

11:05

ourselves into a mess somewhere along

11:09

the way we're going to run into

11:10

something on a on our way to our goal

11:13

that we did not expect that we did not

11:15

assume was going to happen that we're

11:17

not prepared for true it's going to

11:20

happen the people that succeed are those

11:24

who are creative resilient and adaptive

11:26

the people that can sit there say okay

11:28

that didn't work

11:29

huh let's try going left no that didn't

11:31

work let's go right okay that didn't

11:33

work oh we can go over okay over worked

11:35

all right let's keep

11:37

going and that's where we need to be we

11:40

need to be those people that are sitting

11:42

there going th this plan didn't work

11:45

okay that plan didn't work that doesn't

11:47

mean we're not going to reach our goal

11:49

it just means we need to go find another

11:51

way of doing that and that might mean

11:53

taking three steps back it might mean

11:55

treading water for a bit that's not

11:58

failure

12:00

what's failure is is when you give up

12:02

you throw up your hands and you walk

12:03

away that's that's the only time you're

12:05

going to fail and only if you don't

12:08

learn from that position if you learn

12:10

from that and you take that those

12:12

Lessons Learned and you go achieve the

12:14

next goal then you haven't truly failed

12:17

but if we take the time and we sit there

12:19

going you know what sometimes we need

12:21

need to go backwards in order to go

12:23

forward sometimes we need to slow down

12:24

to speed up thank you for saying that I

12:27

literally said that like 15 times in the

12:29

last three weeks to certain individuals

12:31

I'm like slow down to speed up we're in

12:35

2024 folks and before you know what

12:37

're going to be at the end of:

12:39

at the same time don't be running in

12:41

going like you know what it is those

12:43

beags that we're talking

12:45

about sometimes people uh diminish the

12:49

value of a beag God I'm so in love with

12:51

this term uh with like New Year's

12:54

resolutions I'm going to lose 20 pounds

12:57

like do not conf confus the two right

13:00

because I feel like sometimes they vags

13:02

become resolutions when it's not meant

13:04

to be for that

13:06

purpose it's a it says it's back to a

13:08

dream you want to lose 20 pounds but are

13:11

you willing to do the work that it takes

13:13

and sacrifice what it takes to lose that

13:16

20 pounds and for most people the answer

13:18

is no most people the answer is

13:21

absolutely not that you know they buy

13:23

their gym membership they go three times

13:26

they get depressed and they go back and

13:28

they eat a you know a whole a whole

13:30

thing of twees I have a bag of chocolate

13:33

right in front of me on my desk I am not

13:35

going to be losing any timeo anytime

13:37

soon right

13:39

now but we have to realize that is say

13:42

unless we we have to know ourselves we

13:45

have to know ourselves is what what's

13:46

really important to us and what are we

13:49

willing to sacrifice yeah in order to

13:52

get to where we want to be and if we're

13:54

not willing to go through the hard times

13:57

in order to get to the success

13:59

then we're never going to succeed

14:01

because there is no hack there is no

14:03

easy button there there is no you OIC

14:06

that's going to you know lose us 50

14:08

pounds without you know some cost to it

14:12

you know the question is we don't know

14:13

what the we don't know what the cost is

14:15

in the long term of the ratifications

14:17

but trust me you know as they say it

14:20

says you know every every piece of magic

14:22

has you know has an opportunity and has

14:24

a cost attached to it you know so we

14:27

have the opportunity but we also of the

14:29

cost and we need to be able to look at

14:30

that when we're looking at our goals

14:32

when we're looking at what we're to

14:34

achieve what are we willing to sacrifice

14:37

what are we willing to do

14:39

without in order to get what we really

14:41

truly need or is it just a want that we

14:45

go geez it'd be really nice if I lost 20

14:47

pounds that's nice you're now 30 pounds

14:50

heavier than you were be before you said

14:52

that don't get me started but yes that's

14:54

me thank you I'm working on it people

14:57

work it's a progress

14:59

work in progress let's let's leave it

15:01

there you know everybody put it in the

15:03

note I want to hear what your beags are

15:05

we want to be I want to hear I want to

15:07

hear how you're going to get there I no

15:09

more than what your beag is I want to

15:12

know what what help do you need to get

15:15

there what do you need to learn what do

15:17

you need to do to get there and what do

15:18

you need to give up in order to be

15:21

successful so let's leave it there I'm
